Fine jewelry vs fashion jewelry: how to tell the difference

Metal, karat mark, weight and stones: how to tell.

Fine jewelry is made of precious metal, such as 14K or 18K gold or platinum, usually set with natural or lab-grown diamonds and gemstones. Fashion jewelry is made of base or plated metals and priced for trends. To tell them apart, check the karat mark, the weight, and what the seller says in writing.

Side by side

Fine jewelry Fashion jewelry
Metal Solid gold, platinum or silver Brass, steel, zinc or other base metal, often plated
Gold Karat marked, such as 14K or 18K "Gold tone", "plated", sometimes unmarked
Stones Diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, pearls and other gemstones Glass, crystal, cubic zirconia or simulants
Wear The metal does not wear off Plating can wear through at high-contact spots
Repair Can be resized, polished, re-set Often cannot be repaired
Price Follows the price of gold and stones Follows the trend
Role Worn for years Worn for a season

Fashion jewelry is not bad. It suits a trend you may not keep. The point is to know which one you are buying, and to pay a price that matches.

How to tell if a piece is solid gold

1. Read the description. "Solid gold" or "14K gold" is a claim about the whole piece. "Gold tone", "gold plated", "vermeil" and "gold filled" are not. 2. Look for a karat mark. Common ones are 10K, 14K or 585, and 18K or 750. The numbers 585 and 750 are the same purity written as parts per thousand. 3. Check the weight. Solid gold feels heavy for its size. A hollow piece feels light. 4. Ask the seller in writing. A good seller answers plainly. 5. Have a jeweler test it. A jeweler can test gold accurately. Home tricks such as a magnet are rough at best.

What the numbers mean

A karat is a share of 24 parts. 14K is 14 parts gold in 24, or 58.3 percent. 18K is 18 in 24, or 75 percent. The rest is other metals that give strength and color. Our guide to 14k or 18k shows how the two compare.

What the US rules say

The Federal Trade Commission's jewelry guides set out how these words may be used. In summary, from 16 CFR 23.3 and 23.4:

  • Gold filled: a layer of karat gold bonded to a base metal, at least 1/20 of the weight of the whole.
  • Gold plate: a thin layer, at least 0.175 microns thick.
  • Heavy gold electroplate: at least 2.5 microns.
  • Vermeil: a sterling silver base with gold of at least 10 karat, at least 2.5 microns thick.

We compare all four in solid gold vs vermeil vs gold-filled vs plated.

Why fine jewelry costs more

You are paying for three things: the metal by weight, the stones, and the hours of hand work to set and finish them. The price of gold moves every day, which is why our prices follow the daily gold rate and are fixed the moment you order. See how much a custom solid gold charm necklace costs for the numbers, dated.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fine jewelry and fashion jewelry?

Fine jewelry is made of precious metal such as 14K or 18K gold, usually with real gemstones. Fashion jewelry is made of base or plated metals and follows trends.

How can I tell if jewelry is solid gold?

Read the wording, look for a karat mark such as 14K or 585, check the weight and ask the seller in writing. A jeweler can test it accurately.

What do the stamps 14K and 585 mean?

Both mean 58.3 percent gold. 14K is 14 parts in 24. The number 585 is the same share in parts per thousand. For 18K, the matching mark is 750.

Why is fine jewelry so expensive?

Because you pay for gold by weight, for stones, and for the hand work to set and finish them. Gold also moves in price every day.

Does fine jewelry have to be gold?

No. Platinum and silver can be fine jewelry, as can gold with gemstones. Gold plated or vermeil pieces are a different category.

Is Ilene Joy fine jewelry?

Yes. Our chains and charms are solid 14K or 18K gold, set with diamonds and gemstones, and made to order in Los Angeles.
