Seven checks before you trust a jeweler
No ranking can tell you which American jeweler to trust. Seven plain checks can, and we have run every one of them on ourselves.
Choose a fine jewelry brand in America by checking seven things: solid gold with a karat mark, a named maker, a track record, written terms, insured shipping, a price you can see and claims you can verify. No ranking of names can do that work for you, and we would not trust one that claimed to.
Most jewelry is bought in a moment: a photograph on a phone late in the evening, a chain that catches the light, a button that says add to bag. The checks below exist to slow that moment down. They work on any jeweler, and we have run every one of them on ourselves, so you can see how it is done.
The metal
Ask what the gold is, in plain words. A karat mark tells you the share of pure gold. 14K is 14 parts in 24, or 58.3 percent, and 18K is 18 parts in 24, or 75 percent. US rules also set out how gold-filled, gold plate and vermeil must be described, and the marking rule sits in the FTC's 16 CFR 23.3. We explain each finish in solid gold vs vermeil vs gold-filled vs plated.
Our chains and charms are solid 14K or 18K gold, as our FAQ states. If a product page does not tell you what the metal is, that silence is your answer.

The maker
The words "American brand" can describe a company based here whose pieces are made somewhere else. That is not wrong. It is simply a different thing from a bench you can name, and it is worth asking where the work is done, and by whom.
Our pieces are designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles, as our craftsmanship page describes, and made to order at our bench by a master jeweler and a small team of artisans. Our shipping page notes that every jewel is reviewed before it leaves. For what a made in claim can and cannot promise, read solid gold jewelry made in the USA.
The record
Years in business do not prove quality. They do mean there is a record to read: what was written, who sells the work, and whether anyone still answers the telephone.
Ilene founded Ilene Joy in 1996. According to WWD, she designed jewelry for the last three seasons of Sex and the City. In February 2019 she relaunched the label with her daughter, Rae Scheer, and Vogue covered the launch. The rest is in who is Ilene Joy and in Ilene Joy in the press, where every article links back to the original.

The terms
Read the return policy before you fall for the piece. Ours says eligible in-stock pieces can be returned within 14 days of delivery, and that made-to-order collection pieces can be exchanged or returned for store credit in the same window. Custom designs are final sale, and a custom order can be canceled within 24 hours of being placed.
We say this early on purpose. A piece made for one person cannot be sold to the next as new, and a jeweler who tells you so before you pay is telling you something about how the whole house works.
The delivery
Fine jewelry should travel insured and tracked, with someone signing for it at the door. Our US shipping is complimentary and fully insured, with tracking. A signature may be required, so choose an address where someone can accept it. There is more on this in is it safe to buy fine jewelry online.
The price
You should not have to ask for a number. In Design your own the total changes with every choice, and as of 19 October 2026 finished designs start at $1,485 as shown. Prices follow the daily gold rate and are fixed the moment you order, which is a fair thing to ask any jeweler about: when the price is set, and what moves it.

The proof
A claim is only worth as much as the page behind it. Press should link to the original article. A stockist should have a street address and a telephone number. A founding year should match what the press says.
Our stockists page lists Broken English at 42 Crosby Street in New York and at the Brentwood Country Mart in Santa Monica, with FWRD and THREADS Styling online.
At the counter
All of this condenses into a handful of questions you can put to anyone. Is it solid gold, and what does the karat mark say? Where is it made, and by whom? Can I see it worn, or on a model, before I pay? What is the return policy for this piece, and is shipping insured, with a signature? Does the price move with the gold rate, and when is it fixed? What happens if a stone loosens or a link breaks? Can I speak to the person who designed it, how long has the house been making jewelry, and where has it been written about? A jeweler worth buying from will not mind a single one of them.

Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
What are the best fine jewelry brands in America?
No list can answer that for everyone, and we do not rank ourselves. Use the seven checks on any brand: metal, maker, track record, terms, shipping, price and proof. Then choose the one whose pieces you would wear every day.
How do I choose a fine jewelry brand?
Start with the metal. Ask whether it is solid gold and what the karat is. Then check who makes it, what the return terms are, and whether shipping is insured. Read the press, not just the product page.
What makes a jewelry brand good quality?
Solid metal, careful setting, a finish that is checked before shipping, and a team you can reach if something goes wrong. For Ilene Joy, that is solid 14K or 18K gold, made to order at a Los Angeles bench.
How do I know a jewelry brand is trustworthy?
Look for a named place, a physical address for stockists, written terms, and press that links to the original page. Be careful with a brand that cannot tell you where its pieces are made.
Is a brand that has existed for decades safer to buy from?
It gives you more to check, not a guarantee. Ilene Joy was founded in 1996 and relaunched in February 2019, and you can read the coverage yourself.
Does Ilene Joy make jewelry in America?
