Three ways to buy fine jewelry in Los Angeles

An atelier by appointment, a boutique case in Santa Monica, or a Los Angeles bench reached online: how each works, and what to check first.

In Los Angeles you can buy fine jewelry three ways: from a designer's atelier by appointment, from a boutique such as Broken English at the Brentwood Country Mart, or online from a bench in the city. Ilene Joy can be found all three ways, and every made-to-order piece is typically ready in 2 to 4 weeks.

The choice has less to do with geography than with how sure you are. Some people arrive with a date and a clear picture of the piece in their head. Others need to hold a chain against the collarbone before they know anything at all. And some would rather sit at home late in the evening, moving a charm a few links to the left until it finally looks right. The city has a way of buying for each of them.

Three afternoons

The atelier is the slowest route and the most personal. You book a time, you talk to the designer, and the piece is made after you order. It suits a custom commission, or a gift you cannot afford to get wrong, and it asks for a little patience in return.

The boutique is the quickest. You can try finished pieces in an afternoon and walk out wearing one. The catch is that a case holds what the shop has bought, not everything a designer makes, so it pays to ask what is in stock before you drive across town.

Buying online from a Los Angeles maker lets you see the whole range, and the price, from your own sofa. In exchange you rely on photographs, an on-model view and the written terms, which is why the terms deserve a slow read. None of the three is better than the others.

The bench

Ilene Joy is designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles, as our craftsmanship page sets out. Ilene works alongside her master jeweler and a small team of artisans, and anything you compose in the builder is made to order at that bench. A small selection of finished pieces is kept ready to ship.

The atelier itself is by appointment only. Private appointments with Ilene can be arranged, and for anyone who cannot come in, Zoom consultations are available worldwide. Write to atelier@ilenejoy.com with a date and a few words about what you have in mind. We typically reply within one business day.

The case in Santa Monica

Our stockists page lists Broken English at 225 26th Street, Suite 17, in the Brentwood Country Mart in Santa Monica, and also at 42 Crosby Street in New York. Time Out includes the shop among the jewelry shops of Los Angeles.

A boutique case changes with what has sold and what has arrived, so call before you go and ask which Ilene Joy pieces are in it that week. If you are already in the neighborhood, our guide to fine jewelry in Santa Monica and Brentwood covers that route in more detail.

On a screen

The third route starts at home. In Design your own you choose a chain, add charms, place them where you want them, then switch to an on-model view, which is a guide to how the piece sits rather than a photograph of it. As of 19 October 2026, finished designs start at $1,485 as shown, and each is ready in 2 to 4 weeks.

Your design lives in the page link, so you can save it and send it to us. That link is often the most useful thing to bring to an appointment, in person or on Zoom. It shows us in a moment what a long description would take a page to explain.

Before you pay

Whichever door you walk through, ask the same few things. They are the checks in how to choose a fine jewelry brand in America, applied to a purchase in this city.

Start with the metal: is it solid gold, and what is the karat? Then ask where it is made. A label that says Los Angeles can mean designed here, made here, or both, and it is fair to ask which; our piece on solid gold jewelry made in the USA explains the wording. Find out who you will deal with after the sale, ideally a name and an email that gets answered. Ask how the piece will travel, which should mean insured, tracked and signed for. And read the terms before you fall for anything, because custom pieces are often final sale.

When the date is close

Made-to-order pieces take 2 to 4 weeks. Pieces in the Ready to Ship collection leave within 2 to 5 business days, and rush requests can often be accommodated, depending on the piece, the stones and the production schedule. If you have a date in mind, write to the atelier early. Every step between order and delivery is in made to order: what happens between ordering and delivery.

In Los Angeles and the surrounding areas we offer white-glove delivery; write to the atelier after you order to arrange it. Elsewhere in the United States, shipping is complimentary and fully insured.

A first visit

If you are starting from nothing, the simplest plan runs like this. Decide whether you want something made for you or something finished. Open the builder and save a design, even a rough one. Send us the link with your date and your questions, then choose an appointment or a Zoom call. When you order, we confirm every detail with you. Ilene founded the label in 1996, and who is Ilene Joy tells how she began and how the press has covered her.

Ilene Joy was founded in 1996 and relaunched in 2019 by Ilene and her daughter, Rae Scheer. Every piece is made to order in solid 14K or 18K gold at our Los Angeles bench.
