Lion and panther charms: what they mean and who chooses them
What each stands for, and who chooses which.
A lion charm stands for courage and a calm kind of authority. A panther charm stands for quiet strength: fast, self-contained, and nobody's pet. People choose them to mark a hard year survived, a new role, or simply a way of carrying themselves. Both can be worn in solid gold.

Strength, without the slogans
Strength is not always loud. Some people want a charm that says so out loud, and some want one that says it only to them.
The lion and the panther are good examples of each. They are both big cats, and they stand for strength in two very different ways.
The lion
The lion is the oldest picture of courage we have. It is called the king of the beasts. It appears on coats of arms, on gateways and on coins, and it has been used for a very long time to stand for pride, leadership and bravery.
A lion charm says: I can lead. It is a good choice for a new role, a promotion, a business of your own, or for a person you want to encourage.
The Majestic Lion Medallion is a sculpted lion's head with emerald-set eyes, framed by pavé diamond halos. It runs from $1,188 to $3,396 in 14K or 18K gold.
The panther
A panther moves quietly and does not look back. It stands for strength that does not need an audience: grace, independence and focus.
A panther charm says: I know what I am doing. It suits someone who is private and fierce at the same time.
We make two.
- The Panther Charm is sculpted into the head of a panther, fully set in diamond pavé with emerald eyes. $1,293 to $3,867.

Prices are from 14K in Small to 18K in Large, as of 19 October 2026. They follow the gold rate.
Lion or panther?
| Lion | Panther | |
|---|---|---|
| What it says | Courage, leadership, pride | Quiet strength, independence, focus |
| Feeling | Warm, regal, steady | Cool, sleek, private |
| Charm design | Sculpted head with emerald eyes and diamond halos | Sculpted head with emerald eyes, or a panther with a ring |
| Good for | A new role, a milestone, a leader | A fresh start on your own terms |
| Starting price | $1,188 | $1,293 |
If you cannot choose, wear both. The lion and the panther sit well on one chain, and the emerald eyes echo each other.
What is a panther, exactly?
"Panther" is not a species of its own. It is a word used for a leopard or a jaguar. A black panther is a leopard or a jaguar whose coat is dark. So when you wear a panther, you are wearing one of the big cats, rendered in gold.
Other strength charms
Strength has more than one shape. If neither big cat feels like you, there are others.
- The serpent stands for renewal and for protection, as our note on the serpent explains.
- Arrows, compasses and stars are about direction and resolve. See arrows, compasses and North Stars.
- The bee works in a group, and our piece on the bee tells you why.
How to wear a strength charm
Alone. A single lion or panther on a Standard chain reads as a statement without clutter. Choose a circle, box or rolo chain for a bit more weight. Our guide to which chain is best for charms compares them.
With a protective eye. Strength and protection are often worn together. The protective eye is the usual partner.
As a gift. A strength charm is a good present for someone who has finished something hard. Our gift guide has ideas for graduations, new jobs and milestones.
You can place either cat on a chain and see it worn in Design your own.
