How to choose a website to design custom jewelry: eight checks before you start

Eight checks before you design anything online.

Oval chain bracelet in solid yellow gold

Check eight things before you design custom jewelry online: whether you can see your own combination, whether the price updates as you choose, who makes the piece and where, how long it takes, the return terms, the metal, whether you can reach a person, and whether you can save the design. Ilene Joy's builder answers each one on the page.

Check What to look for How the Ilene Joy builder answers (19 October 2026)
1. Preview Your own combination shown on a person or wrist, not only the maker's photo Flatlay and On model views of the chain and charms you chose, for necklaces and bracelets
2. Live price A total that moves with every choice One tap on a charm updates the total. A $635 chain plus an $850 charm reads $1,485
3. Who makes it, and where A named place and a named maker Made to order at our Los Angeles bench
4. Time A stated range, and what shipping costs Ready in 2 to 4 weeks, with complimentary insured shipping within the US
5. Terms Whether custom pieces can be returned, and the cancel window Custom pieces are final sale. A custom order may be canceled within 24 hours. This is on the page before you design
6. Metal Solid or plated, and the karat Solid 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, rose or white
7. A person A way to ask a question before you pay A note for the goldsmith of up to 500 characters, a callback request, private appointments in Los Angeles and Zoom worldwide
8. Saving and sharing A way to keep the design and send it Save design and Share. The link reopens your configuration on any device, with no account needed

We built Design your own so you can see the piece on before it is made. Checks 1 and 2 matter most for charm jewelry, where the placement is the design.

Four kinds of custom jewelry site

Kind How you design What you see before you pay Suits
Commission with a designer You describe an idea and the jeweler sketches or makes a 3D render A sketch or a render, once a project has started One-of-a-kind pieces and rings with stones
Engraving tool You type text and pick a font and a metal A picture of the text Names and initials
Photo-swap configurator Option buttons change a product photo The maker's photo of each option Simple variations
Live builder with an on-model view You assemble parts and place them, and the price updates Your own combination on a model, with the live total Charm necklaces and bracelets, where placement matters

None is better in every case. A ring with a center stone needs a conversation. A charm necklace, where the mix and the spacing are the whole design, is what a live builder is for.

Red flags

  • Only the maker's pictures, with no preview of what you chose.
  • A price that appears only at checkout.
  • No stated place of manufacture or time to make.
  • Terms that appear only after you have paid.
  • "Gold" with no karat, or "gold tone".

A five-minute test for any site

  1. Build the same piece on two sites. A chain at 16 inches with one charm is a fair test.
  2. Note what the preview shows and whether it changes when you do.
  3. Watch the total. Does it move at every step?
  4. Find the made-to-order terms before you reach the cart.
  5. Send one question. The Ilene Joy atelier typically answers within one business day.

What we offer

You choose from six chains in Petite, Standard or Jumbo, in 14K or 18K gold, and 47 charms and 26 medallions. You see the result as a flat layout and on a model. You can start from one of eight finished designs, from $1,485, or from a blank chain.

The preview is described on our pages as "a creative visualization, not an exact representation." We confirm every detail with you after you order. For how the making works, read what happens between ordering and delivery.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the best website to design custom jewelry?

The right one is the one that passes the eight checks above for the piece you want. For a charm necklace or bracelet, look for a live preview, a total that updates, and clear terms. Ilene Joy's builder is built for that, and you can check it against the list.

Can I see custom jewelry before I buy it online?

Sometimes. Some sites show only the maker's photo. In the Ilene Joy builder you see your own chain and charms laid flat and on a model before you order, and the page says it is a creative visualization.

How do I know a custom jewelry website is reliable?

Check who makes the piece and where, how long it takes, the terms before you pay, the karat of the metal, and whether a person answers questions. If any of those is missing, ask before you design.

How long does custom jewelry take to make?

It varies by maker. Ilene Joy pieces are made to order at our Los Angeles bench and are ready in 2 to 4 weeks, with complimentary insured shipping within the US.

Can I return custom jewelry?

Check before you design. Ilene Joy custom pieces are final sale, and a custom order may be canceled within 24 hours of being placed. The terms are on the Design your own page.

Can I talk to a person before I order?

Yes. Leave a note for the goldsmith in the builder, request a callback, or write to atelier@ilenejoy.com. Private appointments are available in Los Angeles and Zoom consultations worldwide.
