Charm necklace or charm bracelet: which should you buy first?

How to choose your first piece, and wear both together.

Circle chain bracelet in solid yellow gold

Choose a necklace first if you want your charm to be seen by other people and to rest near your heart. Choose a bracelet first if you want a lower starting price and a charm you can see yourself all day. Both are made on the same six chains, so wearing them together is easy.

Price: the bracelet starts lower

A bracelet needs less chain, so it needs less gold. Across our six chains, the bracelet costs about half the 16 inch necklace in the same link size.

Chain, 14K yellow Bracelet, Petite Necklace 16", Petite Bracelet, Standard Necklace 16", Standard
Oval $318 $635 $1,221 $2,441
Paperclip $499 $998 $1,918 $3,835
Box $1,278 $2,556 $4,914 $9,828

Look at the two starting looks on our Design your own page. Keepsake, a necklace with one hamsa charm, is $1,485. Bright Eye, a bracelet with a Magic Middle and one sapphire protective eye charm, is $1,497. The charm and the connector make up much of each total, so the two end up close.

Visibility: who is the piece for?

A necklace is seen. Someone across a table can read a charm at your collarbone. That makes it the better choice for a symbol you want to show, or for a gift you want to be noticed.

A bracelet is felt and seen by you. You glance down and it is there. Many people like that private quality, especially for a charm with a personal meaning.

Wear: what a day looks like

A necklace rests against clothing and moves little. It is easy to forget you are wearing it. A neckline decides what shows.

A bracelet goes through everything your hands do. Typing, washing, carrying bags. It is more likely to knock against a desk or a door frame, which is one reason to keep to one to three charms.

Size: finding yours

Necklaces come in 16, 20 and 24 inches. 16 sits at the base of the throat, 20 falls near the collarbone, and 24 reaches the sternum. The layered necklace guide explains how the three work together.

Bracelets come in four wrist sizes: Small (6 to 6.5 inches), Medium (6.5 to 7), Large (7 to 7.5) and X-Large (7.5 to 8). Measure your wrist with a soft tape, just above the wrist bone, and choose the size that contains your measurement. If you are between two, the atelier can advise. Email atelier@ilenejoy.com.

Can you wear both?

Yes, and a pair works well. A few ways to do it:

  • Match the chain. The same link style in both gives a matched pair.
  • Match the metal. Wear one gold and keep it consistent. Yellow with yellow, rose with rose.
  • Share one charm. Put the same charm on both, in different sizes. The necklace takes the Large and the bracelet takes the Small.
  • Or contrast. A paperclip bracelet with an oval necklace gives two different textures in the same gold.

Our guide to choosing the right chain compares all six.

If you are buying as a gift

For a gift, a necklace is simpler: there is no wrist size to guess. A 16 or 20 inch length is a safe choice. A bracelet is more personal but needs a size. If you are not sure, ask the recipient's friend, or write to the atelier. Our gift guide by moment has more.

A simple way to decide

1. Do you want it to be seen? Necklace. 2. Do you want the lowest starting price? Bracelet. 3. Do you plan to add charms over time? Necklace has more room. 4. Do you want something to look at all day? Bracelet.

If you still cannot choose, open Design your own, build one of each in the same chain, and compare them on the on-model view.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a charm necklace or a charm bracelet first?

A necklace is seen by other people and has more room for charms. A bracelet starts at a lower price and stays in your own view. If it is a gift for someone whose size you do not know, choose the necklace.

Which is cheaper, a charm necklace or a charm bracelet?

The bracelet chain costs about half of a 16 inch necklace chain in the same link size. A Petite oval bracelet is $318 and a Petite oval necklace is $635, in 14K yellow, as of 19 October 2026. The charms are priced separately.

Can you wear a charm necklace and bracelet together?

Yes. Matching the chain style or the gold color makes them look like a pair. Putting the same charm on both is another easy way to link them.

How do I choose my bracelet size?

We offer four wrist sizes, Small (6 to 6.5 inches) to X-Large (7.5 to 8 inches). Measure your wrist and pick the range that contains it. If you are between sizes, write to the atelier for advice.

Which is better for everyday wear?

Both work. A necklace is less likely to knock against things. A bracelet is easier to see and wears through more daily activity. Solid gold suits both.

How long does either take to arrive?

Each piece is made to order at our Los Angeles bench and is typically ready in 2 to 4 weeks. US shipping is complimentary and fully insured. See shipping and returns.
