JournalWhat it means

A moon that changes, a star that stays

The crescent shifts and the star holds still: what each shape has come to mean, and how to wear the two together in gold.

A crescent moon and star charm stands for change and constancy: the moon shifts night by night, the star holds its place, and together they say that even in the dark there is something to steer by. On a chain, the crescent turns a little as you move. The star beside it stays put.

A single curved line

Pick up the Starlit Crescent Charm and the diamonds catch the light before the gold does. It is a crescent moon with a radiant star, set with pavé diamonds in 14K or 18K gold, in Small, Medium or Large.

Much of the crescent's appeal is its outline. It is a single curved line, and a curve sits well against the neck or the inside of a wrist. It does not argue with a collar or a cuff. It simply follows the body.

People choose a moon for a reason as often as for its looks: a new beginning, such as a move or a new job, or a wish for calm and rest after a long stretch without either.

The oldest clock

The moon is the oldest clock and calendar we have. It grows and shrinks in a pattern anyone can follow from a window, and that visible cycle is why a crescent came to stand for change that is on its way, and for starting again.

Two of our medallions set the crescent inside a whole sky. The Galaxy Medallion places a diamond pavé crescent among three stars on a fully set backdrop, so the entire face glitters. The Celestial Enamel Medallion draws a crescent and five stars on white enamel, cooler and more graphic.

A fixed point

A star is a point of light you can find in any sky. For travelers it has always meant direction, because a star is fixed when everything below it moves.

The North Star is the best known example. It stays in nearly the same place in the northern sky, so people have used it to find their way for a very long time. As a charm it stands for steadiness, and for knowing where you are going. Our guide to arrows, compasses and North Stars follows that family of shapes further.

We make the North Star two ways. The North Star Medallion places a diamond North Star within a circular compass design, in an openwork form that lets light through the points. The Mother of Pearl North Star Medallion sets a diamond North Star on a polished mother-of-pearl disc, with a halo of diamonds around it. One reads as metal and air; the other has the soft sheen of shell.

Two shapes, one sky

The crescent moon with a star beside it is a very old picture, and it appears in many cultures. We draw it as a night sky, nothing more.

Put together, the two make a simple thought. The moon shifts, and the star stays. If you are in a season of change, the pair is a gentle reminder that something holds.

That is why the pair suits a threshold. It works as a gift for someone beginning something, for a person who loves the night sky, for a new baby, or for a birthday. If her sign is a favorite subject, our note on celestial and zodiac charms goes on from here, and our gift guide has more occasions.

On the chain

The starting look called Crescent & Star, shown at the top of this page, is one answer: a Starlit Crescent Charm and a Mother of Pearl North Star Medallion on a Petite circle chain bracelet, with a Magic Middle connector.

There are others. Let the crescent be the larger charm, with the star hanging beside it a size down. Mix two golds, a yellow crescent with a white star, so warm meets cool. If you prefer a single charm, the Galaxy Medallion carries moon and stars together. And for a necklace you mean to wear for years, the True North look sets the North Star Medallion beside a lariat on a Standard circle chain.

Open Design your own and begin from either look. You can move the charms along the chain and see how they fall before anything is made.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What does a crescent moon and star charm mean?

It stands for change and constancy: the moon shifts, and the star stays. People wear it for guidance, for a new beginning, for calm, or because they love the night sky.

What does a moon charm symbolize?

A crescent moon stands for change on the way, new beginnings and rest. The moon's visible cycle makes it a natural symbol of renewal.

What does a star charm mean?

A star stands for guidance, hope and direction. Travelers have always steered by the stars, so a star charm can mean that you know where you are headed.

What is a North Star charm?

The North Star stays in nearly the same place in the northern sky, so it has long been used for finding direction. As a charm, it stands for steadiness. We make a North Star Medallion and a Mother of Pearl North Star Medallion.

How do I wear moon and star charms together?

Put them on one chain, with the crescent as the larger charm and the star beside it, or choose a medallion that holds both, such as the Galaxy Medallion. The Crescent & Star starting look in Design your own is a worked example.

What metal looks best for moon and star charms?

White gold gives a cool, silvery look, yellow is warmer and rose is softer. Charms follow your chain's color by default, and you can change any of them in the builder.
